Formed in 2003, Below Canada began their side hustle as a band with a dream—to move their music out of Spectaculand, their attic, and into your ear. Their first gigs were held in basements during long winters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Although the band has had several iterations, the core members have always been Sid Tincher, Jackie DesJarlais and Dana Lundell. Below Canada began playing covers by REM, Dixie Chicks, Kathleen Edwards, Lucinda Williams, and Ryan Adams. They graduated to writing their own songs, often holing up in cabins, Airstream trailers, and cottages in locations ranging from Wisconsin to New Mexico to Oregon. Their sound lives along the cool edges of the heartland but rocks hard like a summer day in Santa Fe. The element that threads the range of styles together is the use of familial, three-part harmony. Pretty skies, rough rides, and riptides are some of the themes on their first indie album, entitled The Wolf Will Be Waiting. Released in September of 2020, The Wolf Will Be Waiting features songs such as Riptide, which was influenced by the Japanese tsunami of 2011 that coincided with the loss of a mother to cancer, and also the song Won’t Be Home Tonight, which is a stirring tribute to a woman who lost her life in the Paris night club shooting in 2015. The counterpunch to the more serious songs is Bad Girl, a rocking anthem of defiance. Below Canada is currently holing up in Santa Fe, working on a new multi-genre album.
